Jatgoeul Traditional Market

Gapyeong Eupnae-ri, where Gapyeong Jatagoeul Traditional Market is located, used to be a market where government officials, civil servants, and restaurants for merchants and travelers were concentrated. As a result, the five-day market was opened for the first time in 1923, and it became a traditional market with more than 90 years of tradition. Gapyeong-gun has more eco-friendly resources than other large cities, and due to its nature as a tourist city, Gapyeong-gun still retains its own ruralness unlike other cities. However, due to the development of industrialization and the changing times, large discount stores and department stores have begun to emerge, and the national market is shrinking and disappearing. In particular, the five-day market became more and more difficult to find, and the streets became more urbanized and friction with the market began to arise due to the landscape project and the urban renewal project. Therefore, this project was designed to protect traditional markets in Gapyeong-gun, which have historical characteristics, and to find problems and solutions through analysis of the surrounding areas. As a result, Gapyeong-gun has many other low-rise buildings, and lacks basic infrastructure such as old signs and color lines, broken roads, sidewalks, neglected garbage and structures, and unestablished public facilities. Therefore, we decided to implement the step-by-step project through a long-term approach rather than a short-term approach, and in 2016, we proposed a color painting project in a village called 'IZAMAL' in Mexico, one of the successful cases overseas, and selected the color of the site as yellow and began to re-pain all the aging buildings. Also, we partially planted forsythia flower murals as a point. As a result, the streets became brighter and more lively, and through continuous consultation with merchants, we rebuilt the name of the traditional market as 'Gapyeong-gun Jatagoeul Traditional Market' and suggested additional designs for branding. Over the next two years from 2017, Gapyeong-gun County has completed the signboard maintenance project by expanding the large-scale project cost. From 2019 until now, through the additional budget injection, the company has continued to build up its contents, festivals, food events, and events such as holding signs, sculptures, guides, elephant trains, food trucks, market lighting, event programs, contents, festivals, and events.
